We’d like to introduce Ghada Wali Sherif Mahmoud - former student of IED Firenze's Master in Graphic Design - proud  voice of modern Egypt with a bright vision for present and future design.

“ IED transformed my design path. It was the real leap in my growth as a person and as a designer

Q: could you tell us what was your career path prior and after the IED course? What has been the educational contribution of IED compared to your natural creative skill?

A: IED transformed my design path. It was the real leap in my growth as a person and as a designer. As an Egyptian, it is not easy to decide to live abroad for a year with all the expenses it requires, I was lucky to find the possibility of applying for a scholarship with IED. I applied for their yearly online competition and I won. I landed in Italy but I met the whole world. One of the main points of interest was the ability to be exposed to a diversity of people from different backgrounds and cultures right in the same class. This didn’t just mean meeting new people but naturally the projects, brainstorming sessions, design influence, also meant further exploration. I studied everything I loved! Diversity of courses: personally I always loved every area of graphic design when I was researching programs. I figured out that this course is a mixture that I honestly did not find elsewhere.

“ The support that the IED team gives you to reach beyond the norm is one of a kind!

Q: what is your occupation now? Any interesting projects that you can share with us?

A: I am the founder of Wali's Studio. I’m a Human, a Designer, an Artist who believes Design can change the world. Please find below link to my bio:

“ One of the main points of interest was the ability to be exposed to a diversity of people from different backgrounds and cultures right in the same class ”

Q: you obviously had some expectations while choosing IED for your studies. What were your expectations and what was the reality?

A: the exposure to the real world that IED offers is amazing where we had the chance to work on real brands and clients in the leading European market. As a professional designer who already worked before, studying through the master course I have gained a lot of experience and would definitely recommend every designer to try this phenomenal journey. Great mix of theory vs. practical work. I am a person who loves research and scientific studying yet believes that design education with not tangible output is useless. IED programs offered a balanced mix of both. Full freedom in choosing my design subjects. Coming from the Arab world I had the full freedom to design Arabic-based projects that my professors could not understand but totally supported all my choices in building my own design identity.

Q: were there any interesting/remarkable moments from your IED time that you could share?

A: the support that the IED team gives you to reach beyond the norm is one of a kind! I would contact my professors even on weekends and they never failed to give me full time support in every step, especially the director of the program Marzia Lodi. I ended up not just living in another city, gaining design education and experience but also connecting with people that I think will always stay most influential in my life.

“ When I was researching programs, I figured out that this course is a mixture that I honestly did not find elsewhere ”

Q: Italy is a renowned country of great tradition values with a unique creative atmosphere, with headquarters of worldwide known brands. Do you think this played a part in determining your decision to choose a school in Italy? Why did you choose IED Firenze for your education?

A: Florence is one of the most beautiful cities in the world: inspiration is everywhere. As a designer living in Italy I found a very rich visual culture that keeps your inspiration levels on the top all the time! I took my stay in Italy as a chance to attend the main design events in the world, and being a student charged me half the price! I saw design weeks in Germany (Typo Berlin), Spain (Offf Barcelona) and the Dutch Design Week of Amsterdam.

“ The exposure to the real world that IED offers is amazing where we had the chance to work on real brands and clients in the leading European market

Q: now when you are an IED alumnus, what would be your advice to those going to IED for studying?

A: make the best out of this unparalleled experience, it is full of opportunities. My work at IED won some awards: some projects I worked on have been featured on international platforms, exhibited in the Dubai Design Week, won two Adobe Awards, one Munich Granshan, IED was by gateway to Forbes! I was in fact nominated in the “Under 30” competition.

“ Through the master course I have gained a lot of experience and would definitely recommend every designer to try this phenomenal journey

Q: how do you see your future?

A: one who doesn’t have a history, does not have a future. I create a work that is relevant to who I am and where I come from. I have gained global recognition on the works that specifically celebrate my identity. My aim is to encompass the Arab & Egyptian flavour through portraying my work on the maps of global trends. I want to create a visual revolution in Egypt and the Middle East, I want to spread Graphic Design education and increase awareness of its necessity in our daily lives. I hope that one day I can be responsible for implementing the role of Graphic Design in Education, Health, Politics and any fields where design can contribute to promoting, maximising and reviving my country and the whole region.
